Words To Live By

“My relationship with my mom is really the single most profound relationship that I’ve ever had in my life,” she tells me...But her voice breaks when she starts talking about how she sat down with a pen and paper and asked her mother to give her all the advice she could possibly give her before she died, and Kaling realized she’d never be able to ask her mother for advice again. “I said to her, ‘Mom, I’m going to be so lonely without you.’” She’s crying now but keeps going. “And she just said, ‘You have to be your own best friend. If you always remember that, you will always have someone there with you.’”
-Mindy Kaling via The Vulture

I've ranted about my love for Mindy Kaling in a few posts here. She's a witty, independent, and not afraid to speak her mind kind of chick. I'd like to believe she's a woman after my own heart. I recently read this article via The Vulture about her time at The Office and the launch of her show The Mindy Project. Talk about making my heart swoon even more. The part where she opened up about the passing of her mom really tugged at my heart strings.

Have you guys gotten to that point where you realize everything your parents ever told you was actually true? Guilty. I try my best to listen to the wisdom of my parents nowadays and really let it all just sink in. After reading about Mindy Kaling's request to her mom about advice, it inspired me to do the same. I asked my mom to write me 5 pieces of advice she would want to leave with me and my sister.

Sorry for such an amateur picture. I felt that the beauty in her words would suffice.

Of course, being the overachiever that she is she decided to give me 6 pieces of advice. I can hear her voice speaking to me as I read through each line. I hope I can still hear her voice speaking to me even after she's long gone. This simple piece of paper has now become one of my most prized possessions. Each piece of advice is something she has tried to instill in my heart ever since I was a child. Even at a cool 28 years of age I'm still rigorously working on weaving these thoughts into my everyday life.

If you're lucky enough to still have your mom present in your life I highly recommend asking her to do this for you. It's just one of those things that no amount of money could ever buy. I'm grateful to have such an amazing example of a Godly woman in my life and even more blessed to be able to call her my mom.
